Chapter Seven

Peter had honestly expected Zayne to want to avoid him after that. For the first two days, that was exactly what the omega did. Zayne either stayed in his room, or when Peter appeared in the kitchen, the living room, or the gym, Zayne made himself scarce.

It was hard, being avoided by the man he was desperately in lust with, and it was lust. Peter had to remind himself of that. Any other feelings he happened to have for Zayne were because of the mating. He wasn’t in love with Zayne and Zayne wasn’t in love with him. He had to get that thought out of his head as fast as possible, because it was never going to work out.

Peter sure as hell didn’t want to talk about this with Galen or Dallas. Galen had practically demanded he open up about what was going on, had threatened to grab him by the throat and put him on his back if he didn’t fess up, but Peter wasn’t going to say a damned word.

Of course, an alpha wouldn’t be an alpha if he didn’t follow through with his threats, so Galen had eventually grabbed him and thrown him onto the ground. Fuck, sometimes Peter forgot how strong he could be, considering they were both alphas. Peter still didn’t say anything. Galen had to let him go. He wasn’t the sort of alpha who would rip out Peter’s throat for not answering his questions. What else could he do?

Dallas had tried the softer approach, but Peter was in no mood to explain how heartsick he was feeling over one little omega, either.

Dylan was probably acting as Zayne’s shoulder to cry on, which Peter was grateful for. Omegas needed to talk to each other when it came to their emotions. Alphas either needed to fight or work out in the gym.

Peter took the gym, though he was trying to get Galen to have a decent fight with him. That might work better at getting all this energy out of him than the weights.

Peter spent the last two mornings in the gym, and he was on his way to grab some lunch after four solid hours. Something smelled good. A warm cinnamon scent had wafted downstairs through the grates, and it had called him back upstairs.

When he got there, he stopped short.

Zayne was in the kitchen. He was bending into the oven, checking on something. He must have sensed Peter was close, or he smelled him through that sweet scent, because he suddenly stood straight, the both of them staring right at each other while Zayne held a fork in his hand, and Peter’s heart did that lurching thing again.

He stepped back. “Sorry. I’ll come back.”

“No, wait.”

Zayne held his hand out, as if wanting to physically stop him from going anywhere. Peter stopped short, his heart doing more of that slamming thing in his chest. Zayne’s eyes were wide, as if he could hardly believe Peter had done as he’d asked and not left him high and dry.
